The Glaser Murphy Retina Treatment Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland, announced on December 9, 1998, the development of a new treatment called Phi-Motion Angiography that can improve the vision of people who have the wet form of Macular Degeneration.
According to Drs. Bert Glaser, Robert Murphy and Robert Flower, the technique applies a high-speed scanning laser to acquire rapid sequence images of microscopic feeder blood vessels underlying the retina.
Current treatment uses laser photocoagulation, which can stop leakage of these vessels, but also destroys healthy retinal tissue. Guided by Phi-motion Angiography, doctors at Glaser Murphy use micro-laser applications to avoid this kind of damage. More than forty patients have been treated at Glaser Murphy, and specialists in Japan are also using the new treatment, which can target the delivery of the laser to an area as small as fifty microns.
